Product information management 3.0
Posted 21/05/10 by Stefan Herold
Product communication gets more and more important in social networks.
Right now the third generation of product information management is started and gets more and more important in social networks likes facebook, twitter and as well on the modern mobile devices like iphones,...etc.
Why third generation of PIM?
If we look back into the past at the end of the 90th, the first companies started with Database publishing (DBP). With high effort they brought some product information into a database and produced some publications controlled by a database. For some publications it was ok and partly successful. But print was only one output channel. With the big internet hype in the beginning of 2000, a lot of market places grew very strong in the world. Good product information was necessary to feed the market places. The second generation of Product information management was started. The software vendor developed together with the industry standards for im- and exporting product information. Together with industrial standard classification like eCl@ss, ETIM,...etc. standard software were more and more available. The word CMP - Cross Media Publishing was common to show that product information can be exported media neutral. Right now the name is changed to Product information management (PIM) - which is the right word to show that product information is used in several channels. A product is not only visible in a print catalog, a store or on a web page. It must be available with all information after scanning a barcode or enter a name in a price search engine via a mobile phone. Push it into the new communication channels like facebook and twitter. Show the details, new offer and very important show the review of the product with a lot of details. The internet goes more and more into the outernet. The global data synchronization makes it possible.
What means outernet?
The internet goes to the outside, into a retail shop, in the train,...etc. Wherever you are the access with high speed Smartphone is today possible and it is important to have the access to your products! The product of the day - do you know how many follow ups you can get by publishing this automatically in facebook or twitter? If you don't like this new media - I can understand - but don't forget the new generation - that's your new customers for the next years.
Be ready for the product information management 3.0!
